How to Set a Song as a Ringtone on Android

Frustrated with your Android phone’s default ringtones? With the aid of the free software Ringtone Maker, here’s how to create a personalized ringtone.

You’ve probably changed the ringtone on your phone at some point. It’s very simple on Android devices: go to Settings – Sound and look for the option (where this is may very depend on the manufacturer). Although there may be 15 or more general tones to choose from, what if you wish to make your own?

When you receive a call, Android has added the option to add another sound to your library, however, it will just start playing from the beginning of the song. Imagine listening to the Eagles’ Hotel California and only hearing the guitar accompaniment from the first minute!

That’s where Ringtone Maker, a free program, comes in handy. You can even cut the mp3 clip down to the precise section of music you’d like to play when you get a call once you’ve granted access to your files. This is how you do it.

After you’ve downloaded and opened Ringtone Maker, you’ll be greeted by a dated-looking interface.

However, you should see a list of all the mp3 files that have been downloaded to your device thus far. Adding a song to that playlist is simple, thanks to sites like Clip Converter, which can download the audio from any YouTube video.

The three dots next to your chosen file – we’re using a royalty free track from bensound.com as an example – will play them if you tap on them. You’ll see a number of options, but the one you want is Edit.

After that, you’ll see a waveform timeline of the audio, which you’ll recognize if you’ve ever used audio editing software. Trim, Remove middle, and Paste are all options for selecting the piece of audio you want to use.

You can even modify in millisecond increments if your finger isn’t precise enough. When you’re satisfied with your decision, press the Save button. The clipped audio can be saved as a ringtone, alarm, notification, or music.

Make a ringtone, give it a name, and then save it. Ringtone Maker will ask if you want to make it your default ringtone, or you can go to Settings > Sound and choose it from there.
